Where can you fly fish with us in Bariloche?

We know every fishing destination in Bariloche, thanks to our extensive experience as fly fishing outfitters

Our fishing agency, with our expert guides, offers trips to the most outstanding spots in Argentine Patagonia. Depending on the season and experience level, there are options for all tastes. Some of the destinations where I have fished throughout my life are:

MANSO RIVER

We are the only fishing outfitters in the Manso River area. There is no fishing pressure here. If you’re looking for more trout, this is your river. Fly fishing in the Manso River region is little known due to its natural beauty, far from cities, as is our Glamping Fly Fishing Lodge. We fish with floating and sinking lines, dry and wet flies at different times of the season and throughout the day. The Manso River is mostly fished with floating lines and dry flies, an effective way to attract larger trout. You’ll find several stretches of the river where nymphs are especially effective, and in combination with a small stream, sight and drift fishing can be an excellent option.

Fly fishing on the Limay River is one of the most exciting experiences in Northern Patagonia. This wide, fast-flowing river flows from the Andes through crystal-clear waters, deep pools, and long stretches, ideal for catching large trout. The Limay is especially famous for its migratory brown trout, trophy specimens that return from the lakes to the river each spring, staying there throughout the fishing season until their return to the lake in March, April, and May. It is ideal for those seeking technical challenges and large catches with fly fishing in Patagonia.

The Collón Cura River is a tributary of the Middle Limay River; it’s one of the most beautiful rivers in Patagonia, with no access points in or out, and the only way to fish it is to camp. It has many shallow currents that flow into large pools where trout rest. Around February, there are migrations of puyen trout that can be imitated with small, light streamer-type flies, and the fishing is incredible. It’s a difficult river to access, which is why we organize expeditions there with camps. The landscape is stunning, and the flora and fauna are reminiscent of being in the middle of a national park.

The Foyel River is a long, meandering, fast-flowing river. It rises at the top of the mountains with icy glacial water, and as it reaches the valley, it transforms into a very calm river surrounded by willows. From the peaks to its mouth, the Foyel River invites fly fishing with various techniques, especially nymphing and wading. If you’re floating, we’ll get off the boat and continue walking; however, the boat is used solely for transportation on this river. We’ll be here to teach you a little more about each of the flies used to attract flies to this river and some tying techniques.

Jurassic Lake, also known as Strobel Lake, offers some of the best fishing in all of Argentina because the trout that inhabit it reach great size and strength. One of the characteristics that has enabled this trout to grow so much is that the lake is very pure, clean, and has an abundance of food, allowing them to migrate in large schools from one place to another. These schools are distributed throughout the lake, and then there are many trout that are alone, sometimes the largest and have their own territory. While these trout also migrate to streams to reproduce, they are a distinct group of trout that reside in specific bays. We have the record of 12 kilograms, thanks to the persistence of our guides, who managed to catch that trout. We guarantee that we are always very close, every year, to seeing a bigger one.

Crystal-clear streams, lagoons, and Patagonian mountain lakes complete the ecosystem and multiply the fishing opportunities. Among them are Lake Hess, with brook trout chasing small river trout near the shore, and the remote and almost magical Lake Fonck, where large trout abound in calm bays. We also explored Lake Mascardi, Lake Guillelmo, and Lake Roca, each with its own unique character and recommended fishing techniques. These lakes are always best experienced during the early season, in November and December, when the trout are swarming at the mouths of rivers and streams, and fishing is most successful with small streamers. Why? Fishing is more fun, and the bite is much more aggressive. You’ll find 1- to 2-kilogram brook trout in the bays and casting streamers along the shorelines.

We had a wonderful day fly fishing in May with Juanito. I am new to fly fishing and my boyfriend is experienced, and Juanito was able to easily accommodate us both. We were at the end of the season and unfortunately did not catch anything, but it was still the highlight of our trip. The lunch was excellent (vegetarian option even provided upon request) and the overall experience was top notch! Price is very reasonable for a once in a lifetime experience in a beautiful place with a fantastic guide. We highly recommend!

I had a fantastic day with Trout Bariloche and their guide Juanito, who understood exactly when to help and when to step back. Top service, great local knowledge of the waters, where and what the fish would take. Dry fly fishing was great with several nice browns to the net. If you are in the area and look for great fishing, they are as good is it gets!

I had a great day fishing Rio Manso with Juanito in early December! I was a single female traveler with limited fly fishing experience, so Rio Manso was recommended for my skill level and it worked out great. I caught 10-15 fish, mostly rainbows and a brown, nothing huge but bigger than I usually catch in Maine so a big success in my book! Juanito was a great guide and gave very helpful and easy to follow tips to improve my casting and land the fish.

Great guide, beautiful river, plentiful trout. Our day drifting the Limay was productive and insightful. Juanito our guide took his time providing my wife with excellent casting instruction and took his time putting us over many good holds. Aside from that the river is beautiful and the weather was perfect. Juanito was also a font of local information and we had a wonderful time. Highly recommend

The guys at Trout Bariloche love what they do, and who can blame them?! Stunningly beautiful, crystal clear river, dropping through steep canyons and loaded with hungry, strong rainbows and browns. From the reservation process to the pick up, the instructions geared towards varied skill and experience levels, the onsite prepared lunches, dinners, and the top notch accommodations, literally every detail is considered. My 12 year old son and I had an absolutely fantastic, bucket list time fly fishing Argentina. We caught a ton of fish, vastly improved our skills and enjoyed every minute of it. We’re beyond appreciative of the staff and guides, and can’t wait to return. Best trip ever!

I had an absolutely fantastic day fishing the Rio Manso with Juan and Miguel. My fly fishing skills certainly required some improvement, and their tuition was patient and thorough, and I felt I improved significantly by the end of the trip. We caught fish pretty much non-stop for the entire day, surrounded by the most incredible Patagonian scenery. The lunch was also excellent. Easily one of the highlights of my 4 month trip in South America. Will definitely be booking another trip when I return to Argentina!

ABOUT FISHING

We’ve been fishing the Limay River for 40 years. We offer high-profile drift boats specifically designed for these rivers and their corresponding weather conditions. On windy days, they have a designated area to secure the line so it doesn’t blow away.

The Limay River, just a few kilometers from Bariloche, is one of Patagonia’s most iconic rivers for fly fishing. Its crystal-clear waters descend from Lake Nahuel Huapi and extend along the steppe, forming slides, deep pools, and wooded banks that provide habitat for world-class rainbow and brown trout.

It is a versatile river where the fishing experience changes depending on the species you are targeting, from resident rainbows to abundant local browns.

MANSO RIVER FLOAT TRIP

ABOUT FISHING

We are the only fishing outfitters in the Manso River area. There is no fishing pressure here. If you’re looking for more trout, this is your river. Fly fishing in the Manso River region is relatively unknown, as is our Glamping Fly Fishing Lodge, both due to their natural beauty and remote locations. We fish with both floating and sinking lines, as well as dry and wet flies, at various times of the season and throughout the day. The Manso River is primarily fished with floating lines and dry flies, an effective method for attracting larger trout. You’ll find several stretches of the river where nymphs are especially effective, and when combined with a small stream, sight and drift fishing can be an excellent option.

Our Glamping Lodge Patagonia 🏕️ is a unique, riverfront property situated within a remote stretch of the Rio Manso. The ranch spans 6,200 acres and features private water and comfortable facilities. Fishing the Manso River is the best option for day trips to catch a variety of fish.

If you want to stay overnight in a more secluded location, consider the Glamping Lodge in Rio Manso; it’s private and located next to the water, where you can enjoy steak and Malbec wine.

Camping Trip between rivers and lakes

ABOUT FISHING EXPEDITIONS

Camping trips in Bariloche and northern Patagonia are the best way to find yourself fishing alone on a river, just like you’ve always dreamed. Argentina’s rivers are teeming with boats, just like everywhere else in the world, except during these camping trips. Brown trout are very solitary creatures and don’t like the pressure of fishing, especially encounters with houses, cars, and bridges. We realized that the best way to find the wildest trout was to lead two- or three-night camping fly-fishing expeditions. These expeditions can last a week and are the best option if you want to experience the wildest parts of Bariloche and its surroundings. We have about 10 rivers for multi-day float trips, as well as some inaccessible lakes that are a long drive from and from which you can’t return in a single day. Junín de los Andes is the best place to start any of these trips, along with San Carlos de Bariloche and Esquel. Bariloche remains a destination with clear waters, clean rivers, and countless secret fishing spots where you can still find yourself alone, experiencing countless dream fly-fishing situations. Argentina is currently the last place in the world for such wild trout fly fishing and the only country in the Americas with clean, wild rivers throughout its entire length, and we can find the best spots with our company’s professional fly-fishing guides.

Fishing Lodge in yurts on the banks of the Manso River

ABOUT FISHING IN THE GLAMPING LODGE – MANSO RIVER

The Manso River originates in the heart of Nahuel Huapi National Park, on Mount Tronador. It has several sections; the lower section is the best option for anglers. The Manso River is approximately 130 km long and flows into Chile, joining the Puelo River, before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. Its course includes several lakes, such as Lake Mascardi and Lake Hess, and is renowned for its scenic beauty and excellent fly fishing. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful landscapes in Patagonia, with unparalleled crystal-clear waters.
The geomorphology of the Manso River varies constantly, from Class II+ rapids and deep currents to very shallow, fast-flowing pools where the water barely moves.
The floating section of this stretch begins at Lake Steffen, where, with luck, you might witness a small spawning run that will put a good number of rainbow trout practically within reach. This doesn’t make them any easier to catch, as these flies are 22 mm long and the trout become very selective.
Once on the river, fishing will be done primarily with floating lines, nymphs, or dry flies. Pheasant tail and pearlhead lines are excellent choices. Attractants, such as Madame X or Stimulator, also work well and increase the chances of catching a resident brown trout.
In some sections of the river, we find large pools with rainbow trout feeding on or near the surface. In these pools, we reduce the fly size and lengthen the leader. A size 18 Mayfly Spinner could fool these selective rainbow trout.
